Welcome to the website of the MFI Upgrading and Rating Initiative of the Development Bank of Austria (OeEB) in East Africa.
In the context of many success stories of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and the fast growing number of MFIs in developing countries, the Development Bank of Austria has launched the “ MFI Upgrading and Rating Initiative in East Africa”, a project to further develop this sector in 6 countries in East Africa, namely in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
The project aims at increasing the capacity of selected MFIs in the six countries of operations, with a view to upgrading them to investment grade rating level. This will be done through targeted training and capacity building services addressing the weaknesses of the selected MFIs with respect to international standards. Eventually, MFIs will receive an internationally recognized rating, a highly-important element for attracting investors. After the successful upgrading and rating, the OeEB will consider financing the most advanced MFIs to further contribute to their development.
The MFI Ugrading and Rating Initiative in East Africa has started operations in November 2008 and is running for 4 years.
The project is funded by the Development Bank of Austria (OeEB) and implemented by the ATC consortium, an international consortium of leading consultancies led by ATC Consultants (Austria), in cooperation with Wiener Börse (Austria), K-Rep Avisory Services (Kenya). and Microfinanza Rating (Italy).
This websites provides all useful information about the project as well as resources for MFIs, such as information on training events in East Africa, useful links and the Knowledge Management database in open and restricted access areas. This platform also provides resources for investors and donors on MFIs participating in the project.
